OzHarvest runs a Food Rescue Program that collects excess perishable food from restaurants, caterers, function venues and corporate events etc and delivers it in a refrigerated van to hostels, homeless refuges and any organisation that feeds people in need. The service is completely free to all concerned and provides the missing link between excess food and those in need. They own and operate delivery vans that are on the road 6 days a week and they currently service the CBD, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, Lower North Shore and Western Suburbs of Sydney. They deliver on average 45 000 meals a month to over 90 charities feeding the hungry. OzHarvest is non denominational and non sectarian. They assist any charity or organisation that helps those in need. Most welfare agencies work within a strict budget and are seldom able to provide a variety of high quality food to their clients. The food that OzHarvest rescues enables these charities to offer their clients a variety of nutritional food items. It also results in charities being able to redirect scarce resources to education and rehabilitation. OzHarvest is committed to the safe collection and delivery of food. OzHarvest operates within the guidelines of the New South Wales Health Department's food handling procedures and employees are trained to State recognised standards in food handling. Their food donors are protected by The Civil Liability Amendment (Food Donations) Act 2005 OzHarvest is supported by companies Corporations, Private and Public Foundations as well as private philanthropists.
